Join us for a unique journey into Yellowstone’s Central
Plateau region and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.
Tours depart at 8:30 am, in town pickups start at 8:00
am. Your tour follows the Madison River for the first
fourteen (14) miles which abounds with wildlife during
the winter season. Herds of Bison and Elk are close at
hand. Photography opportunities are everywhere. The
Madison River does not normally freeze, due to thermal
run off water influence. Animals and water fowl of
varying types are seen throughout our tour. At Madison
Junction we pause at the Warming Hut then leave the rest
of the tours behind and head into Yellowstone’s less
visited wilderness.
We follow the Gibbon River through
Gibbon Canyon and past Gibbon falls toward the Norris
Geyser Basin. Thermal features are more viewable in the
cold winter air. You’ll see Yellowstone’s Central
Plateau is dotted with thermal features as steam can be
seen in all directions. We turn east at Norris and start
a slow climb upward toward the Grand Canyon Region. Snow
levels are extreme at this elevation (8000 ft.) as we
churn our may slowly along. The spectacular Grand Canyon
of the Yellowstone with the Lower Falls (309 ft.) and
Upper Falls (109 ft.) await our viewing. We visit both
the South and North Rims of the Canyon and search out
wildlife that may be wintering in the area. It’s a sight
to behold that only a few every get to see. After our
visit to the Canyon area our return journey is spent
looking for photography opportunities and short nature
walks. Our Tour returns to West Yellowstone at
approximately 5:00 PM.
Note: Please come prepared with good winter
shoes; coats, hats and gloves, for comfort.
Winter Conditions: Tours operate at minus 20 degrees or
higher.
Road conditions are harsh, tracked vehicles only.
Snowcoaches operate at slow speeds.
